Wind Mitigation Inspection Credits

1. Building Code
The age of the home and the building code it was constructed under can affect wind resistance.
To qualify for this credit:
The home must have a permit date after September 1, 1994 in Broward or Miami-Dade Counties, or
After March 1, 2002 everywhere else in Florida.
2. Roof Covering
The roof covering must meet newer building standards.
To qualify:
The roof permit application date must be on or after September 1, 1994 in Broward or Miami-Dade, or
After March 1, 2002 in all other Florida counties.
3. Roof Deck Attachment
The way the roof decking is attached to the roof structure plays a major role in wind resistance.
To qualify for this credit:
The roof deck must be attached using 8D nails spaced no more than 6 inches apart.
4. Roof-to-Wall Attachment
This determines how securely the roof structure is connected to the walls of the home.
To qualify:
The home must have hurricane clips or straps with at least three nails securing the connection.
5. Roof Geometry
Certain roof shapes perform much better during high winds.
To qualify:
The roof must be a hip roof, with no other roof shape exceeding 10% of the total roof area.
6. Secondary Water Resistance (SWR)
Also known as a Secondary Water Barrier, this feature helps prevent water intrusion if the roof covering is damaged.
To qualify:
The roof must have a self-adhering polymer modified-bitumen roofing underlayment.
7. Opening Protection
This refers to protection for all exterior openings, including windows, doors, garage doors, and skylights.
To qualify for this credit:
All openings must have Large Missile Impact Protection (such as impact-rated windows or approved hurricane shutters).
Partial protection does not qualify for this credit.
